Snow Cream

Oh the weather outside is...rainy? Well, unfortunately in Western PA, that's how it has been for the past week. But prior to that, we had a nice snowfall. During that time I collected some snow for snow cream! What is snow cream, you might ask?

Snow cream is more than a delicious dessert, it is also a memory for me. My Mamaw, who past away recently, would always talk about making snow cream during the winter. My aunts have also always made this wintery dessert, and I guarantee if you went to visit my Aunt Bonnie or Aunt Barrie at almost anytime during the year, they would have a batch of snow cream in their freezer. I figured it was time for me to past on the tradition.

Doesn't that look amazing? Like a pile of sweet, snowy heaven.

This stuff will help you make sense as to why kids stick their tongues out to catch snowflakes.
Normally, I hate snow. But snow cream makes me anticipate our next snow fall. You better get your bowls and ice cream scoops ready!!

Aunt Barrie's Snow Cream

Ingredients:
1 cup of Heavy cream
3 Tbsp. of Sugar
Vanilla, to taste (I used 1/2-1 tsp approx)
4 Cups of fresh dry snow
Cinnamon/Nutmeg to sprinkle

Directions:
On a nice, snowy day, stick a large plastic bowl outside to collect snow. Or you can go out after it's fallen and collect it. Just make sure it looks pretty clean. No yellow snow. Store snow in freezer until you are ready to use.

In a mixing bowl using an electric mixer, beat cream and sugar until peaks begin to form, add vanilla towards the end of beating. Take snow out of the freezer and beat snow into mixture so that it is very light, cold, smooth and firm. Dust with nutmeg/cinnamon and serve immediately or place in freezer until ready to eat!

----------
There are lots of variations to this recipe, but this one is excellent. My Aunt Bonnie just adds milk, vanilla (or other flavoring), and sugar with no particular measurements. You can also add sweetened condensed milk and leave out the sugar all together. I've heard of chocolate and lemon variations, as well. Maybe I'll try those next snow fall!

So, right as I finished photographing this bowl, Shawn comes home. Very convenient, right? He finished the whole bowl.

Like I said, this gives you a reason to look forward to the next snowfall. And, if you are one of the few people who LOVES snow, you can stick this in your freezer and enjoy it in July! Who wouldn't want snow cream in July?
